What would Frank do?
So I have a dilemma. What would Frank do? How would he fix my painting? (Frank in this case is Frank O’Cain, my instructor in Abstract Watercolor at the Art Students League).
First, the painting, so far…
All the strength is in the upper right corner; it dominates the painting. So how would Frank fix it? Given two and a half years worth of his demos I have seen so far, there are two possibilities:
- Make a smaller portion of the upper right corner even stronger. I have seen Frank do this in a demo and it’s amazing how well it works. Making a smaller piece stronger makes the rest of the surrounding area weaker. Unfortunately it’s hard to imagine how I would do this here.
- Develop the bottom and left halves of the painting and make them stronger. This is going to take more thought. If it were easy and I already knew what to do, I would have done it.
Unfortunately, Frank is leading a workshop in France the beginning of June so he won’t be offering me any advice before the last week of June. And I’m vacationing in Italy and won’t be back until June 19 so I won’t be asking for advice until after then.
Maybe I can try some solutions via collage before I go. To be continued…
