In the summer at the Art Students League I paint from the complicated set-up which I help create: flowers, bottles, vases, fruit, fabric galore, trays, stools, and the occasional bird or butterfly. Every day the set-up is different.
The challenge is to pick and chose from the complicated set-up, those objects you want to paint and arrange them in a way that appeals to you on the paper and then actually paint them. The final painting may show little resemblance to the actual set-up. That’s the fun of it.
